There’s many routes to take, regarding teaching here in Taiwan. Since there are a lot of outdated resources out there on the subject, I thought I’d write about a few of them, to give people some idea what to expect in 2012 Taiwan.

Great breakdown of the teaching situation in Taichung. I’m currently here with my American employer but wonder about teaching here in the future. How do the Taiwanese view older teachers? I know it’s rather difficult to get employment in Japan beyond a certain age.
I’d recommend teaching adults instead of children – with experience in business, you will be in demand here because of that. Children really do take a ton of energy to teach. But there’s no real age bias in terms of hiring teachers here in Taiwan. There’s more of a racism issue (whites only) or sexism issue (women preferred) or even nationality issue (Canadians are really hot right now) then an ageism issue.

I know there are many expats who teaches here locally but are not from any native-speaking countries. I wonder how they end up with working visas.
Another, definitively harder, but lucrative way in Taiwan is to look for a job in business. Especially if you speak additional language – many companies higher international managers to help them develop market. Although you can expect basic salary (around 50k for foreigner) + working visa – if you are good, commissions will start to add up. It is usually a day-desk job, and sometimes quite stressful, but gives an opportunity if you get tired of teaching.
